Topical Unpaved Road Stabilization - Dease Lake, British Columbia, Canada

Topical Unpaved Road Stabilization

Dease Lake • British Columbia, Canada

RoadPic

Project Description: A remote section of road in Northern British Columbia was treated with a topical seal coat for dust control and wear course stabilization.

Project Objectives: The objective of this application was to reduce fines migration from the compacted base road, reduce maintenance and resurfacing work to remove potholes, reduce re-gravelling due to loss of material, and reduce fugitive dust emissions. Past maintenance practice involved the use of calcium and magnesium chloride for surface stabilization and dust control. Both calcium chloride and magnesium chloride are water soluble and the wet northern climate caused the surface to become slick during rain and fines to wash out causing rutting and loss of material. T-PRO® 500 was tested as a chlorides alternative to improve function and decrease overall maintenance. Shortly after the application, the local road maintenance contractor noticed a pronounced increase in road density, improved ride quality and less surface degradation compared to the sections previously treated with chlorides. The treated section also did not require maintenance after a heavy rain period which occurred shortly after construction.

Equipment Used: Grader, Water Truck with Spray Bar, Smooth Drum Roller.

Application Specifications: Topical application at a coverage rate of 130 ft²/gallon.

Maintenance Requirements: Removal of loose material from surface and topical re-application of polymer seal coat at a coverage rate of 150 to 180 ft²/gallon.

Residential Subdivision Road Stabilization - Ontario, Canada

Residential Subdivision Road Stabilization

Project Description: A newly constructed unpaved residential road was treated with T-PRO® 500 polymer to control fugitive dust emissions.

Project Objectives: Purpose of the topical polymer application was not only to control the amount of dust generated by traffic but also to create a hard, low-maintenance unpaved road surface for the subdivision residents. The road base was newly built and consisted of a layer of geo-synthetic filter cloth, 600mm of class "B" base (3" minus) gravel material, and 150mm of Class "A" base (3/4") surface material. The road was constructed with excellent surface water conveyance structures including drainage ditching and culverts. The import base used to construct the final wear surface was prepared in accordance with the technical specifications for optimal moisture content and maximum dry density. The local contractor did an excellent job developing a homogenous surface with an even surface porosity and limited material segregation despite the low presence of fines in the mix.

Equipment Used: Grader, Water Truck with Spray Bar, Smooth Drum Roller.

Application Specifications: Topical application at a coverage rate of 70 ft²/gallon.

Maintenance Requirements: Removal of loose material from surface and topical re-application of polymer seal coat at a coverage rate of 120 to 150 ft²/gallon.

Heavy Duty Dust Control on Haul Road - Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Heavy Duty Dust Control on Haul Road

Winnipeg • Manitoba, Canada

Completed Road

Project Description: A haul road adjacent to residential property was treated with T-PRO® 500 polymer to control fugitive dust emissions.

Project Objectives: The objective of this application was to reduce fugitive dust emissions and improve road performance. The haul road was adjacent to a private property which was being severely impacted by traffic and dust. The existing gravel base was previously overlain with 4" minus crushed limestone material to increase bearing capacity for heavy construction equipment. The presence of large particle size crush material at the surface and non-plastic base material below created both a loose and a dusty wear course. Before polymer application, the road was graded to bring up fines and incorporate the larger material into the subbase. The surface was moisture conditioned and recompacted using an 84" diameter single-drum vibratory roller and finished with a topical T-PRO® 500 polymer seal coat application. The topical application of T-PRO 500 accomplished two things; it locked in the migrating fines and improved the hardness of the surface for a smoother ride.

Dust Control On Mine Haul Roads

Dust Control On Mine Haul Roads

Chile

DSC00706 med

Project Description: Terratech reduces mining impact on the environment and surrounding communities through effective and lasting particulate emission control on mine haul roads in Chile.

Project Objectives: Terratech products were chosen as a cost saving alternative to standard water-only dust control on haul roads. The reduction in water consumption through the use of polymer will save hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. This remote and arid mining site currently pumps water from a source 155 miles (250 km) away and processes it through a de-salination system before use, thus making water a very expensive resource. Polymer dust control would change the need for maintenance from daily watering to quarterly applications. It will also reduce wear on vehicles and tires by decreasing the roll resistance of the surface. Improvement in tire and engine life span is an important factor to the mine operator whose daily operation includes over 70, 24-ton haul trucks making runs on a 16 mile haul road.

Equipment Used: Water truck.

Application Specifications: Initial application at 70 ft2/gal (1.78 m2/L).

Maintenance Requirements: Quarterly re-applications at 150 ft2/gal (3.56m2/L), as needed.
