Heavy Duty Dust Control on Haul Road

Winnipeg • Manitoba, Canada

Completed Road

Project Description: A haul road adjacent to residential property was treated with T-PRO® 500 polymer to control fugitive dust emissions.

Project Objectives: The objective of this application was to reduce fugitive dust emissions and improve road performance. The haul road was adjacent to a private property which was being severely impacted by traffic and dust. The existing gravel base was previously overlain with 4" minus crushed limestone material to increase bearing capacity for heavy construction equipment. The presence of large particle size crush material at the surface and non-plastic base material below created both a loose and a dusty wear course. Before polymer application, the road was graded to bring up fines and incorporate the larger material into the subbase. The surface was moisture conditioned and recompacted using an 84" diameter single-drum vibratory roller and finished with a topical T-PRO® 500 polymer seal coat application. The topical application of T-PRO 500 accomplished two things; it locked in the migrating fines and improved the hardness of the surface for a smoother ride.

Equipment Used: Grader, Water Truck with Spray Bar, Smooth Drum Roller.

Application Specifications: Topical application at a coverage rate of 70 ft²/gallon.

Maintenance Requirements: Removal of loose material from surface and topical re-application of polymer seal coat at a coverage rate of 120 to 150 ft²/gallon.
